St Francis Church, Long Eaton The interior of St Francis was altered to provide a new sanctuary and chapel. Intensive work with a series of artists resulted in a powerful statement in what had been a run-of-the-mill 1950’s building. The large canopy projecting over the altar has the effect of pushing the sanctuary out towards the congregation. Painted by Marianne John, it depicts the Tree of Life, with a dove hovering above the font and shallow pool in an evocation of the Piero della Francesca Baptism of Christ. A boldly decorated side chapel provides place for the tabernacle, and the purpose-made furniture completes the project. Project cost: £50,000 click to return to selected projects
