The Client Adviser service was introduced by the RIBA in October 2005, in liaison with CABE, in order to provide clients with independent advice during the lifetime of a project - with particular emphasis on providing advice at the outset of the project.

The advice is independent, because the adviser - even if they are an architect - undertakes not to act as the designer for the project.  This means, for instance, that they can advise disinterestedly at the beginning of a project about whether or not a built solution to the Client's needs is the right one or not.

Tim Gough is accredited as a Client Adviser with the RIBA, and Austin Winkley & Associates offers Client Advice where a client requires an independent view of their project.  We have particular skills in providing such advice in respect of:

  • charities, not-for-profit organisations and churches

  • projects set in an historic environment - such as Listed Buildings or conservation areas

  • conservation projects

Further information on the Client Design Advisor role can be viewed  here on the RIBA's web site.

For clients who need our full range of advice about the initial stages of projects, feasibility studies, options appraisals, how to go from your vision to a built project, and how to tie all this in with a creative design approach, see our section on development advice
